Toshiba laptop, touchpad not clicking. Why?
I have a Toshiba Satellite U500. Last year, the keyboard stopped working when I returned from a two month vacation. So I now use an external keyboard. Just yesterday, the touchpad stopped working. Not completely, the cursor still moves around but when I try to click or double click or triple click, it won’t work. The left key button below the touchpad also won’t work.. only the right key button is working..
It’s quite hard to use it as I currently don’t have a USB mouse or the like.. What’s wrong with the touchpad? Help?

It is possible it is a hardware failure, but also may be a software issue as well, you could at least try going to control panel ->hardware and sound ->mouse and checking the settings there, especially the device settings settings tab. You likely are using a synaptics touch pad.
You can try a system restore to an earlier time and see if it solves the issue as well. I have never had thise problem with any touch pads admittedly though.
You can also order a replacement keyboard for your laptop, as well as a touchpad if it is a worst case scenario. It may be possible that the cable has worked its way loose or has become damaged, despite still receiving power. Many use cheap ribbon cables and flimsy latches to secure keyboard and touch pad cables.

Nancy asks…
Will a virus affect the touchpad of my laptop?
There are three different accounts on my laptop. On my account, administrator, the touchpad doesn’t work. On the other account, it works just fine. I’m not sure about the third account but my guess it works just fine too.

Don’t think it’s a virus. Check the pad settings on the account you have issues with.

Laura asks…
Why does my touchpad work while one user on my laptop is signed on but not while I am?
I thought that it broke then later I realized it always works unless I’m logged on to my user name on Vista

Some laptops have a button that activates the touch pad. This may work similarly to the caps lock, scroll lock, and num lock buttons, which will be switched on or off depending on the user’s preference. You didn’t say what type of laptop you have, so I can’t really give a better educated guess on it. In my experience, touch pads also have some sort of software to accompany them. That could be a cause. However, this is, just a guess, I don’t own a laptop, I have worked with them before though.

Change the Trackpad Preferences in System Preferences. There should be an option of tracking speed, double-click speed and scrolling speed.
